How To Set Segment Sizes For A Gondola

The purpose of this article is to explain how to add a segment (also known as a drop) to a gondola. In addition, this article also explains how to set up a gondola with different segment sizes, how it affects a gondola, how to edit it, and how to delete a single segment.

Applicable Products: DotActiv Lite, DotActiv Pro, DotActiv Enterprise

What Is A Segment?

Before we start it is important that you know what a segment is. A segment, also referred to as a drop, is a section of a gondola spanning one shelf length, from top to bottom. If set to display, the segment will also be indicated with a stipulated line.

How To Set Up Segment Sizes For A Gondola

There are two ways in which you can set the segment sizes for a gondola:

When Creating A New Gondola From Scratch

When you click on the ‘Space Planning’ tab and select ‘New Gondola’, a pop-up window will appear which will allow you to set the amount of segments you want your gondola to have.

The sum of all the segments’ width should add up to the entire gondola’s width. In the above example, the gondola was set up to have 3 segments with a width of 91cm each (thus having a total gondola width of 2.73m). This should reflect in the Gondola Properties pop-up window.

To access the Gondola Properties pop-up window you can either double click on a blank space within the gondola parameters, or you can right-click and select ‘Properties’.

Editing The Segment Size In The Segment Tab Under ‘Gondola Properties’

Once the Gondola Properties window is open, you will see a Segment tab. When you click on it, the following should appear:

The current segment sizes of your gondola will appear in this tab. There is a section for segment height, widths and depths respectively.

In the example below, you’ll see that all 3 segments are set to be 91cm wide.

Please note that because all three segments have the same width, only one value is required.

Also, note in the image above that the ‘display’ box is checked. This means that segments will be visible on the gondola in the colour that was selected. This will come in handy when adding shelves since the shelf’s width should correspond with the segment size.

What To Do When Your Segments Are Different Sizes?

You might come across a situation where you have different size segments in one gondola. The following section will explain how to set this up as well as how it will affect your gondola.

Step 1: Set Gondola’s Total Width

The first step would be to change the total width of your gondola to ensure that all segments will fit. As previously mentioned, the sum of all segments’ width equals the total gondola width. So if, for example, you have a gondola where the first segment is 91cm, the second segment is 200cm and the last segment is 155cm, the total gondola width should be set to 446cm (4.46m).

Step 2: Set Each Segment’s Dimensions

Let’s take the example above where:

  • Segment 1 = 91cm wide
  • Segment 2 = 200cm wide
  • Segment 3 = 155cm wide

After setting the gondola’s total width to 4.46m, open the Gondola Properties window and navigate to the ‘Segment’ tab. Now you can set up the width for each respective segment.

This is all illustrated in the example below.

When it comes to setting the sizes of segments, it is important to note that the figure in the ‘Spacing’ column from top to bottom will represent the gondola’s segments from left to right.

It is also important to note that the last measurement will be applied to the remaining segments.

The exact same method and principles can be applied when you want to adjust segment heights and depths.

How To Add A Segment To An Existing Gondola

If you have a gondola with 3 drops of 91cm (in width) each and you want to add another segment of 91cm: All you have to do is add 91cm to your gondola’s current width and then the extra segment will be added automatically, granted that the width in the ‘Segment’ tab of the Gondola Properties pop-up window is set to 91cm.

How To Remove A Segment From An Existing Gondola

If you have a gondola with 4 drops of 91cm (in width) each and you want to remove a segment of 91cm. You can simply subtract 91cm from your total gondola width, as highlighted in the screenshot.

The segment will then be removed from your gondola.

When you want to remove a segment on a gondola with different segment sizes you will need to define your segments within the ‘Gondola Properties’ window under ‘Segments’.

Let’s say you want to remove the segment that is highlighted in the screenshot below.

You will then need to select the segment that you want to remove and then click on ‘Remove’. This will remove the segment.

Next, you will need to adjust your total gondola width. Click on ‘List Total?’ to view the total width of your gondola.

The total width of your gondola will be calculated and displayed in a pop-up window as seen below.

Go to your gondola width in the ‘Gondola Properties’ window and correct the measurement.

You should now be able to add segments to your gondola, remove segments from your gondola, adjust segment sizes and set up a gondola with different segment sizes.

How to Add a Frame to an Existing Gondola

For adding a frame to a Gondola, simply double-click on the Gondola to access Gondola Properties. From there, navigate to the ‘Frames’ section to make your selection.

In the Frames tab, you can set the frame width dimensions, select the colour, and choose the position of the handles—either on the right or left. To make the frame and handles visible on your Gondola, ensure you check both the ‘Display Frames’ and ‘Display Handles’ options.

After completing these steps, your Gondola should appear as shown below.
